Report links Connecticut deaths to lack of health insurance

HARTFORD, Conn. - Three Connecticut residents die each week because they are not insured against sickness and can not afford to see doctors for regular check-ups, film screenings and other preventive care, according a new report released Thursday.

The study by Families USA, a nonprofit health-care consumers, said such treatment is essential to catch the disease at an early stage and increases the chances of survival.

During 2006, more than 209000 of the 1.9 million people in Connecticut at the age between 25 and 64 have no health insurance, and about 150 of them died in the year, because it does not cover, the report said.

US Representatives Democrat of Connecticut. Rosa DeLauro, Joe Murphy and Chris Courtney say that the study is more evidence that Congress must stop drawing its feet on health insurance and coverage more accessible and affordable.

“This is an alarm signal,” said DeLauro to reporters on a conference call Thursday. “We set up hostilities with other countries. We must go to war, health insurance . We can not afford to wait even longer. ”

Congress is considering several proposals to expand the coverage of the unversichert, including an attempt to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program and a plan to require all Americans to have insurance, members of Congress said.

Murphy called the problem of the crisis of the “working poor”, and the unemployed. He recalled the story of a woman in Connecticut who had had their share of the infected leg amputated several years ago. He had no insurance and could not afford a doctor if the infection was still manageable.

“This is an inhumane way of a health care system,” said Murphy. “It’s also a way for an incredibly inefficient health care system.”

Families USA, said the report, the first, on the deaths that result from a lack of health insurance throughout the country. The figures are based on data collected and analyzed in advance by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the Urban Institute, an independent research group.

“The findings are unfortunately clear: a lack of health coverage is a matter of life and death for many people,” said Ron Pollack, director of Families, the United States.

The group said the new report, 47 million Americans are uninsured in 2006. The Urban Institute estimates that at least 22000 people of working age across the country this year died because they have no insurance.

More than 1100 residents of Connecticut between 25 and 64 deaths between 2000 and 2006 because it does not have a health insurance, families United States said.

The group believes that insurance is important because:

_ Unversichert delay or forgo often needed medical care, health screening and preventive care.

_ No humans are 25% more likely to die prematurely than those of private health insurance.

_ In most cases are not diagnosed with a disease at an advanced stage.

_ More than 60 percent of uninsured people under the age of 65 problems with the medical bills.

Courtney said he has reason for reducing the number of uninsured people by eliminating discriminatory practices that insurers deny coverage for people already suffering from chronic diseases and existing.

“The report shows that, a national tragedy will continue to grow unless it can be sent quickly with solutions,” said Courtney.
